Deepdaan done in the memory of ancestors

Devotees on the Ganga Ghats on Thursday offered lamps in the memory of ancestors. They will pray for the peace of the souls of their ancestors. Also, they will earn the benefits of virtue by bathing in the Ganga.

Deepdaan done at sunset

According to the Pandits, there is a tradition of lighting lamps on the eve of the main bath on Kartik Purnima. Deepdaan was done at sunset on Thursday evening. Devotees reached Ganga Ghat and offered water to their ancestors. For offering water to their ancestors, people take Judi in the morning before sunrise and place it under the Peepal tree. After this, take plain water in a pot and mix Ganga water, milk powder, barley and black sesame seeds in it. Then offer water 108 times on the Kusha Judi and recite the mantra Om Pitru Devataye Namru. All preparations have been completed for this.

More than 20 lakh devotees have reached the fair. The main Ganga bath of Kartik Purnima will be on Friday early morning. For this, people reached Tigridham on Thursday as well. It was told that the ancestors will be offered tarpan by bathing at the Ganga Ghat at sunset and lighting lamps in the Ganga. Pandit Kesham Sharma told that it is believed that Lord Krishna first offered lamps on Chaturdashi in the presence of the Pandavas for the peace of the souls of thousands of soldiers and countless warriors who lost their lives in the Mahabharata war. This tradition has been going on since then.

Since then, people offer tarpan to their ancestors on Chaturdashi, a day before the main bath, during the historical fair held at Tigridham on Kartik Purnima. This lamp offering is done only by those people whose close relatives have left them within a year and have gone to the shelter of Param Pita Parmeshwar. He told that after taking bath in Ganga, donate lamps at the time of sunset. Take bath in Ganga even after this. Also donate food and dakshina. Donating lamps in Ganga during Kartik fair gives peace to dead souls.
